Oil in Uganda:

Preclude to the Resource Curse?

 

In 2006, foreign companies discovered Uganda had commercial deposits of oil. This means that while Uganda is a new arrival among oil producers, in the next few years it will be a middle-tier African producer. How will the Ugandan politicians shapes contracts with foreign oil companies? Will the personal interests of those who control regime lead to development in Uganda or will Uganda become a victim to the “oil curse” witnessed in other developing countries?

About the speaker:

Dr. Juma Okuku is a Professor of Political Science at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He is presently a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Houston and is working on Governance and the Avoidance of the Resource Curse in Uganda’s Oil Economy.
