Get the inside scoop on day-to-day life working at the front lines to develop smart, interdisciplinary solutions to climate change and sustainability. Plus, free pizza! Hunger: The Biology & Politics of Starvation, Presentation by Dr. John Butterly When: 6:30-8:30pm Where: Monstshire Museum Meeting Room, Norwich, VT What: Why do people starve? Despite the proliferation of humanitarian efforts, food insecurity, chronic malnutrition, persistent hunger, and even starvation, occurs because of a lack of political will. In 1948, the United Nations adopted The Universal Declaration of Human Rights -- the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. More than sixty years later famines continue. How is this possible? Dr. Butterly, Dartmouth professor, physician and co-author of the recently published book, "Hunger: The Biology & Politics of Starvation", will navigate us through how and why. Environmental Conservation Organization When: 7pm Where: Collis 101 What: The Environmental Conservation Organization (ECO) is one of Dartmouth's oldest environmental groups. Thursday, Sept. 29th ************** Sustainability Minor Meet and Greet When: 12-2pm Where: One Wheelock, Collis What: Dartmouth's new Sustainability Minor seeks to understand and tackle real-world sustainability problems in our communities and the world at large. The sustainability curriculum will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand diverse perspectives on sustainability and to work collaboratively with peers and experts from different fields. Sustainability is for everyone! The minor incorporates courses in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and visual arts! Delicious, homemade dinner will be provided. *Bring your own bowl and spork!* Friday, Sept. 30th ************** Hawaii as a Model System for Understanding Soils, Ecosystems and Human-Environment Interaction, Lecture by Peter Vitousek '75 When: 4-5pm Where: Life Sciences Center Rm 201 What: Peter Vitousek is an ecologist whose research focuses on many aspects of global change, including the consequences of nitrogen deposition, changes in land-use, and the spread of invasive species. His research program is interdisciplinary and is a successful model for how to build strong connections between scientists and indigenous people. He is also the co-director of the First Nations Futures Program, director of Stanford's Emmet Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2001 he was named by CNN and Time Magazine as one of America's Best in Science and Medicine.
