Ed,
we had the same thing happen here with 7 of our lab PCs (out of 50 or so).
We haven't yet figured out what caused the problem, but they croaked on
Friday, Dec. 3 after about 6pm. We reloaded them and haven't had a chance to
really dig into it since. We thought it was malicious patrons (sorry, make
that mischievous students).  I'll pass on any insights we get.
