We're experimenting with a software only solution. We use web-based
listening activities (Real Publisher is used to create audio files.) Students
record using Sound Recorder which is free. Our problem is storage. At
this point we have network space for our students to save their recordings,
but Sound Recorder does not compress files. We are trying to arrange with
our Computing and Technology Services department to have a hard drive
installed on one of the servers to allow greater storage space.

This is our economy version of a digital lab. We like Can-8, but it is very
expensive, and the sound card is not always compatible with other software.

If anyone is interested in the technological challenges with Can-8, you can
contact Warren Stokes at [log in to unmask] He is an educational
technologist and is responsible for our institution's Modern Languages
Lab. They have used Can-8 for some time.

------------------
I would like to thank everyone who took the time to answer my query in
regards to upgrading our language lab. I am following up on the suggestions
regarding the CAN-8 system.

However, the discourse has left me with two questions:

1) Since the CAN-8 system is a software and hardware solution, have any
users experienced problems with integrating the cards into your PCs? I
expect a digital system to hang or crash occasionally, but do you find
crashes to be excessive?

2) I'm still wondering if anyone is using a software only digital lab. I
realize this might not be feasible, but I would like to stay away from
using third-party cards in my PC's if possible.

Once again, thanks for all the great suggestions!
