Dear friends:

Here are the details of the "Copyright Workshop" at Wesleyan University on Friday, November 12th. This workshop was mentioned at the recent NERALLD meeting at Dartmouth College. Please note that the RSVP date is November 4th.
--------------

The CTW Mellon Project for Language Learning and Technology (http://www.wesleyan.edu/CTWMellon)
with support from the Academic Computing Departments from Connecticut
College, Trinity College and Wesleyan University will be hosting a
workshop for faculty, librarians, computing support staff and
instructional technologists on copyright issues for digital media given
by:

Kenneth D. Crews, J.D.,
Ph.D. Associate Professor, Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis
and IU School of Library and Informational Science;
Associate Dean of the Faculties for Copyright Management;
Director of Indiana University's Copyright Management Center

on Friday, November 12th, 1999
Wesleyan University

Workshop Schedule

Morning Program: 9:00 to noon (Downey House)
"Copyright and Scholarly Communication: Technology, Research, and Libraries"
        As technology has changed the speed and form of scholarly communication, so
has the law of copyright begun to address the particular problems and
difficulties of the Internet as a tool for sharing knowledge. This session
will lay a broad foundation of copyright principles and examine the meaning
of new law that is especially applicable to Internet communications, library
services, and scholarship.

Free time for lunch, etc.: 12-1:30

Afternoon Program 1:45 - 3:45 (302 Fisk Hall)
"Teaching, Research, and Faculty Work: Learning Copyright to Your Advantage"
        Faculty work is increasingly affected by copyright. Fair use sets
parameters on the lawful uses of copyrighted works. New proposals from the
U.S. Copyright Office may lead to changes in the rights and responsibilities
associated with using works in distance education and in Web-based courses.
Copyright law also gives automatic protection for new works, including
teaching materials and research projects. Understanding a little bit about
copyright can help you avoid some common pitfalls of the law and can allow
you to better manage your rights for the more effective advancement of
knowledge through teaching and research.

Feel free to attend only one of the sessions, if your schedule does not
permit attendance to the full workshop. If you plan to attend either session or both of them, please RSVP to Steven Smolnik, by Thursday, November 4th.
