>Subject: Tenure Track in Instructional Technology??

------------------ Dear colleagues:

After graduating with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Colorado and then working as the Language Technology Specialist for the Ohio5 Consortium, I have now moved on to a new position, which is described in the following:

Full-time Faculty Position/Director of Language Resource Center
A full-time, tenure-track position in the Department of Modern
Languages whose duties include teaching three courses per year,
including two or more undergraduate or graduate courses in instructional
technology. The person will guide the integration of instructional
technology into the Modern Languages curriculum and plan and promote
acquisitions for a state-of-the-art multimedia center for the study of
foreign languages and cultures to meet both short- and long-term needs.
Active research and publication is expected for tenure.

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering whether my position is a first. Normally (from what I have seen so far), Directors of Language Labs are either administrative positions, or tenure-track faculty who are doing their research in their respective language/literature, and have to do the Lab stuff on top of it. My emphasis really is on Instructional Technology, the school created this new position with the ever-increasing importance of CALL in mind.

So, to cut a long story short: are there other schools out there who have done the same thing? Are there people with tenure-track positions in Instructional Technology and Language? Or is Ohio University the first school to actually create a position like mine?

Please respond, off-list is fine, I am just gathering data for myself, but will post the outcome on the list if people are interested enough.

Best regards, Jörg
