We have a fee structure built into our budget--it's an
income/expense activity, and changes as our needs change from
year to year. Last year it was $4 per student, per semester, and
that barely covered the tapes we had to buy. Because I'm trying to
upgrade our computer lab, we raised the fee to $7.50 this semester
to cover some of the equipment costs. Some students have
complained a little at the rise in cost, but I make a point of telling
them during our lab orientations where the money goes, and so far
the fee hasn't deterred anyone from taking a language. Next year I
plan to raise it to an even $10 and keep it there. Unfortunately we
have to collect the fee here in the lab--the university can't seem to
come up with a way to include it with the student's other fees
(you'd think with computer technology as advanced as it is...).
We've found that linking the fee with the student ID and "debit" card
is the best way to collect it painlessly.

Hello,

I also have a similar question. Our Multimedia Language Center is currently
operating without a budget, and doesn't charge any type of "lab fee" for its
use. While the administration was willing to pay for its installation, they
did not consider the need for any type of operating budget. As such, they
want to institute a lab fee for all students registering for language
courses (1-4). Is anyone currently charging a lab fee? How much are you
charging? Have there been any negative results (i.e. decreased student
enrollment) as a result of such a fee.

Thank you!

Director - Multimedia Language Center
