In response to the query about dictionaries on the web,
there is a very useful free utility available for your (and your
students') computers at the following URL:
www.babylon.com
This utility is a pop-up translator for words, abbreviations and phrases
that can be easily downloaded to your computer, then invoked in ANY
program you are in which you are working (e-mail, the web, word
processing, et al.) by
clicking on the right mouse button. It gives an immediate translation of
the word or phrase you have selected in nine different languages: English,
Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Hebrew, Japanese, German and Dutch.
It gives ranked translations for whichever parts of speech might be
appropriate. For example, clicking on the word "set" elicits nine nouns,
eleven verbs and one adjective in Spanish alone. Computer terms, medical
terms, business and legal terms are all included in this program's word
set.
This program is fully vetted and safe to use.
It's nothing earth-shaking, but it is a handy utility.
Cheers,
Ed
