>>Subject: HELP! SURVEY INFO NEEDED BY DEAN IN ONE WEEK!!!
>
>Hello all.
>
>Our dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Northeastern Illinois
>University needs to know the following information about other language
>lab facilities to compare with our current lab usage requirements and
>assignments. Our department currently requires all students in General
>Education FL courses (101, 102, and 103 level) to do six lab activities per
>semester which are created by me (mostly, with some faculty assistance for
>languages other than French, Spanish and Italian).
>
>We need to know quickly how other institutions deal with lab attendance
>and mandatory usage. Your responses to the following questions would be
>greatly appreciated.
>
>Please send reply to <[log in to unmask]>.
>
>1. Is your lab used as a classroom or a learning library?
Our lab has two rooms: Open Lab for independent study and "Smart Classroom"
for classes
>
>2. Does your department(s) have a mandatory lab requirement of any
>kind?

Foreign Languages has a set 10 hrs. per semester but the accountablity and
grading for these hours varies. The approach of clocking hours vs.
completing tasks is currently under discussion.
>
>3. If yes to Question #1, is the requirement based on students' time
>spent in the lab or learning tasks completed? Historically a set number of
hours has been assigned. This is being re-evaluated.
>
>4. Is language lab usage mandatory at the departmental level (for all or
>most courses) or at the course level (for individual instructors)?

Departmental level, but not consistently enforced.

>
>5. Are assignments and activities created by faculty or by lab personnel?

Both, some teachers send materials to us and assign related tasks to the
students. This is most effective since it directly links to their current
class topics. Other teachers allow their students to choose their
activities from material lists available in the Language Learning Center.
>
>6. Does your lab keep attendance records? If yes, how?

Yes, students scan-in/scan-out using their ID cards. We receive weekly
attendance reports from Info. Services. These lists are broken out by
class. We send these lists to the faculty offices.
