>Subject: tenure question for tenure track directors

Hi all,

I have a question concerning the development of a tenure-track position
for a faculty member who will be a full time lab director (that is, not
a professor of lit, for example, who runs the lab as just part of his/her
duties, but a person who is indeed hired to run the lab, work with
technology and faculty and teach tech/language courses). For those of
you who are either tenured as full time lab directors or are on a tenure
track position, I am wondering what your job structure is like. In other
words, we are questioning whether a tenure track position for a lab
director should be:

a) 50% administration / 50% non-administration (that is teaching 1 course
per semester and also conducting research and doing service - committees,
faculty workshops)

b) 25% administration / 75% non-administration (that is teaching 2
courses per semester and also conducting research and doing service -
committees, faculty workshops.

Perhaps it is a question of alignment. That is, the 50%/50% could mean
that you "place" faculty workshops under the umbrella of administration
whereas the 25%/75% means you place faculty workshops under the umbrella
of non-administration/service...

Any thoughts??? How are your positions structured? Is this a question of
relevance to a particular department, university, departmental needs????

Thanks!

Linda
