Hi Lauren,

Spanish support for Word varies widely depending on which version of Word.
Here's some stuff I've found out--

1. If you already have the US English version of Word (menus, etc., in
English), and just want to add Spanish proofing tools (dictionary, thesaurus):

Word 6, Word 95, and Word 97 for Windows - the proofing tools can be bought
from Alki (www.proofing.com); you can e-mail them for educational/volume
discount information (I think they have some Mac products as well)

Word 2000 for Windows - Spanish proofing tools are included with the US
English version of Office. For info on how to install them, look at:
http://www.yale.edu/multilingual/westerneuropean/win98/office2ktech.html

Word 98 for Macintosh - Spanish proofing tools ship with the US English
version of Office 98. For info on how to install/use them, look at:
http://www.yale.edu/multilingual/westerneuropean/
(look under the "Macintosh" section of the page)

2. If you're actually looking for the versions of the software with all
menus, help files, etc. in Spanish (these are called "localized" versions):

Word 2000 for Windows, you will want to read this document on how Microsoft
is handling localized versions of Office 2000:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/enterprise/evaluation/wwapp.htm

As for other localized versions of Word, I just took a look at Microsoft's
web site, but they've really hidden most of the info they had up about
versions before 2000. Software vendors that deal with Microsoft products
can usually special order localized versions when they exist (for example,
our ITS dept. can special order localized versions of Windows directly from
MS), but since most people in the US tend to want just the proofing tools,
they can be hard to find. The best I found was the site:
http://www.microsoft.com/spain/office/archive/default.htm though for the
most part it just links to info in English. You may have already tried
this, but if your institution has a Microsoft higher-ed rep (almost--but
not quite--as difficult a thing to find as the software itself), you should
try getting info from him/her as well.

Good luck,
Brad
