Hi Folks - 
I have continued to find this hack very useful with older machines - and especially with APS drive that have accumulated.  With a bit of cajoling, you can have 100% Mac drivers on your machines.  I have performed this operation on my father's PowerCenter Pro, and have it running 8.6 with no problems (out of the ordinary, that is... I certainly can't claim "no problem whatsoever"!)  We've never purchased any upgrades for the CD-ROM drivers, so whatever the last free update was is what it's running.

I won't claim that Apple drivers are perfect/the fastest/etc., but they are supported by Apple (whatever that means -- at least you know that they are the drivers Apple is developing on...).  I feel pretty strongly about having nothing but Apple drivers on all hard disks attached to my machines, and this is a relatively easy way to do it.  The drive does need to be completely reformated the first time, when you are switching to the Apple drivers, but thereafter, it behaves just like all of your other Apple drives -- you install a new system, and it automatically updates the drivers for you -- all data remains intact.
