Unfortunately, I don't believe that you will be able to use Mac OS 8.6 with
your PowerComputing machines. I have experienced many problems trying to do
the same thing. However, it seems that 8.5 is only compatible with orginal
G3 cards and not upgrades. Also, 8.1 was deemed entirely too unstable to
use with my clone. In addition to making one of the biggest mistakes in my
life by buying a PowerComputing machine, close to a $4000 purchase at the
time in 1996--regret is futile--I have spend many hours considering all the
possibilities. I recently purchased a Newer Technology G3 upgrade card for
my PowerCenter 150 machine. Due to TOO many conflict problems, I was forced
to return it. I also had to return my USB card as well because it was only
compatible with system 8.1 or higher which uses the +HFS format. This would
also be incompatible with my version of Norton Utilities-4.5. After much
frustration, I was finally told by several tech support people from MacZone,
Apple Computers, NewerTechnologies, etc., that I should abandon all hopes of
upgrading my system and instead put it in the closet and forget about it. It
would, however, make and excellent server I am told. Sorry for the
negativity of this message, but I have been badly burned by the whole Mac
clone venture. After 2 CD-ROM, 3 hard drive and 4 motherboard replacements
I have no patience left. If anyone has any suggestions besides having a
large beige paperweight, I would appreciate them. Thanks, John.
