GOING THE DISTANCE

Going the Distance, an Interactive on-line teacher development project,
jointly sponsored by AATG and the Goethe Institute offers
German teachers an innovative distance learning course on Teaching Writing
in the German Language Classroom via the web.
Participants can earn 3 graduate credits this fall (October 15, 1999 to
February 28, 2000) at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. This interactive
asynchronous learning environment allows participants to work individually,
in small groups and with instructors in the context of examining the role of
writing in the German language classroom. Five interactive features allow
the participants to interact with instructors and peers alike. The course will
be taught by Joan Campbell (Dartmouth College) and Iris Bork-Goldfield
(Fairfield University). The course consists of six units or explorations that
include the following:
1. Initial Survey
*Here, participants get to know each other and have a chance to reflect on
their own writing and teaching practices.
2. Second Language Acquisition Theory in Writing
*This exploration gives a theoretical background for the teaching of writing
in a foreign language classroom, with examples in German.
3. Looking at Writing in Instructional Materials
*Here participants will look at the resources available to teach writing in
German.
4. The Steps Towards Creative Writing
*Useful writing assignments and their applications to different text types
will be discussed.
5. Creative Writing
*This exploration will give you the tools to make your students successful
and independent writers within and outside the foreign language classroom.
6. Writing Assessment
*The course will conclude with how to assess and grade writing
productively.
The course is limited to 15 participants.

The University of Nebraska will charge $115 per credit hour (3 credits equal $315 and a $195 for
distance fees for a total of $540.00 for the course.) Books (3 will be required) would be additional.
