Interesting figures, seen from the other side of the Atlantic, i.e. South Africa. Our senior student assistants here get max. $3.50 an hour. Starting wage for juniors is $2.30. That is before tax at 25%. 

Relative values? I have no idea! A Coke here costs the equivalent of $0.50, a movie show about $4.00, a burger and fries anything between $1.50 and $2.50.
