------------------
After being convinced that I would be able to play Region 2 discs on a
DVD-equipped PC, I was disappointed when it would not work. After posting my
lamentation on the DVD SIG listserv that I follow, I was able to come up
with a simple program that runs on our Toshiba Tecra 750DVD and that
switches the region codes to which the DVD player responds. It is a piece of
cake after all. And there are solutions out there for other PC-based
playback systems.

Therefore, the solution is not cheap, but it is a short term fix for
accessing DVDs in foreign languages that have been encoded for regions other
than Region 1. Other possibilities will develop (multi-region players) and
the really adventurous can modify their players (if they have no fear of
voiding warranties) with fixes that are available on the Internet.

The neat thing in all of this is the number of DVDs that I am finding here
in France.

Cheers,
