Language Technology Specialist

Arts & Sciences Center for Instructional Technology 
(home of the Language Learning Center)

Job Open to the General Public

The person in this position will provide technical support and expertise in
deploying digital language learning technologies in a university foreign
language curriculum.  Will work closely with Director and with Center staff
in developing policies and procedures in daily provision of services to
students and faculty in eight departments teaching foreign languages and
ESL.  Will work closely with Director on providing training workshops for
and one-on-one consultation with faculty on use of the Tandberg Divace and
Prisma systems and other language learning technologies. 

Other responsibilities include (to be shared with current technician on
staff):

Install, configure, and maintain individual microcomputer workstations
(both PC and Macintosh) operating systems (DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98,
MacIntosh), and application software.  Ensure setup is consistent with
attached hardware and local network environment.  Examine new and upgraded
language laboratory system and computer hardware and software and design
and implement workable installation procedures to maintain workstation
integrity and user friendliness.
Install and maintain NT and TNCI Cheetah servers and workstation hardware
and software.  Train and provide technical assistance to Center support
personnel, faculty and staff in use of network hardware and software.
Perform daily system backups and recoveries when needed.  Devise disaster
recovery plan.
Respond promptly to requests for assistance with micro hardware, software
and network interfaces.  Answer users' questions related to use of
operating systems, hardware, and applications software supported by ASCIT.
Train and work with departmental Level I computer support personnel to
resolve problems and answer questions.
Research, acquire, and implement foreign language computing needs.  This
includes but is not limited to foreign language instructional software,
word processors, web browsers, and email programs, etc. 
Provide training in the use of standard programs and systems supported by
ASCIT. 
In consultation with the director of ASCIT and with other senior computing
support colleagues, evaluate ASCIT and foreign language faculty hardware,
software, and networking needs, and recommend strategies to address those
needs in the area of classroom and lab support.  Serve as representative to
school-wide committees/working groups charged with such tasks as the
establishment of hardware and software standards and the evaluation of
technology trends.  Participate in the planning and implementation of
interdepartmental and institution-wide projects as requested.

PERSON NEEDS GOOD INTERPERSONAL SKILLS TO TRAIN FACULTY AND STAFF IN
STATE-OF-THE-ART
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS. EXPERIENCE WITH WINDOWS NT PREFERRED. KNOWLEDGE OF A
FOREIGN
LANGUAGE AND/OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMPUTING NEEDS ARE HIGHLY DESIRABLE. 

Education or training:  

B.A. in area in the humanities and/or computer sciences or related fields
and at least 5 years work experience; extensive professional experience
coupled with professional training and certification obtained while
on-the-job may qualify in exceptional circumstances; knowledge of a second
language and/or foreign language computing needs are highly desirable.

Salary range:  $ 38851.00 - 60655.00
