I posted the original request for a "boom box with a counter." Several
readers have written in recommending th Eiki 5190 series. Actually, we
have had some of these and it is this line that has really
disappointed us. In addition to the problem with the door hinges which
Jose mentioned below, the counter reset button is positioned such that
it is very vulnerable to breakage, which has happened to us twice. It
sticks up above the surface of the unit, so that anything sliding over
the deck can break it! The cost of repairing the counter is almost as
much as buying a new unit.

EIKI audio tape players are serving TransPacific Hawaii College
(formerly Kansai Gaidai Hawaii College) very well.  There are eight in
study carrells in the Learning Resources Lab.  Seven of them are
approaching three years of service.  These very heavy duty units have
one weakness...the spring hinges for the door to the tape compartment.
The door becomes loose after years of daily use, if that is a
weakness.
All else is fine, especially the counters.
