We have been using a nice little industrial EIKI audiotape player
Model 3279A, for which we paid $125. It does not have a CD player.
It is not a boombox. It's just a great little classroom recorder
with all the inputs you'd like, easy layout of controls, and a good
speaker. It has a mechanical counter (is not real time by any
stretch of the imagination, but is useful if you want a counter).

We use the EIKI when teachers want to record students in class,
and also as a loaner deck for people doing their own recordings
(we would otherwise send a staffperson with our Marantz PMD 430
field recorder and wireless mic, which BTW also has a mechanical
counter).
