I'm about to upgrade our lab - we've been using windows 98 machines on
peer-to-peer but there are a few more things I'd like to do including making
our internet connection a bit more stable.

Does anyone have any experience setting up a linux box to be used as a file
and proxy server for their lab.  It seems like the lesser of a few evils,
which may include novell and NT, neither of which I am terribly keen on
adopting.

I'll still use win 98 on the workstations and I believe that I can linux to
emulate an NT box with SAMBA.  hardware wise this should be the least
demanding route, although I anticipate some compatibility issues.

Any recommendations?  will this offer me the compromise of price and
performance that I'm looking for or is this just a recipe for headaches.
Which version of linux seems to be the best to use?  How is apache web
server, etc.

Also, is there some nice educational software developed for linux - I'm
aware of the browser from Netscape and the Corel WordPerfect suite - but I'm
most likely to keep our windows workstations because of the investment in
language lab software.

Your advice is appreciated.
