Hi, Cindy:
At Richmond, we use three of the BYU CAPE tests (French, Spanish and
German) as placement tests. These are administered at the beginning of
each school year to incoming students who are not satisfied with their
initial placement in language courses. Both French and Spanish
lower-division programs here are intensive -- that is to say, one year
of language instruction is compressed into a semester. German follows
the standard model. Exemption from the 100-200 level language
requirement varies from language to language. Spanish has probably
tweaked its scores the most frequently, German the least.
Here are the cutoff scores for each level:
Spanish 121 0-324 French 121 0-377 German
101 0-297
Spanish 221 325-463 French 221 378-461 German
201 298-514
Spanish Exemption 464+ French Exemption 462+ German
Exemption 515+
In the past, there has been a composition requirement for those students
who receive an exemption score on the Spanish CAPE. They get a subject,
and write one page with no aids (dictionaries, etc.). This policy is
under review.
Hope this is helpful.

We have administered the BYU exams at the beginning and
end of each
semester this year to elementary and intermediate
classes with the aim of
establishing benchmark scores for placement. Even with
one year's data, we
are having trouble setting the benchmarks, as our scores
are evenly spread
over a wide range. I have a feeling that this may have
something to do
with the fact that the exam didn't "count" in any way.
I'd like to hear from others who are using the BYU
exams. How did you
establish your benchmark scores? If you're willing to
share the
information, I'd be interested to know what score ranges
you use for
different levels.
Thanks for any advice.
