>Subject: summary of responses #4924 audio cassette distribution

------------------
Back in March I asked about how you all deal with copying and distributing
cassettes to students (our old language lab is being closed at the end of
the semester, but faculty still want students to have access to tapes).
Now that I have a spare moment here is a summary of the responses I
received. (And if anyone else has any other ideas, comments or
suggestions my ears are still open!)

I received 5 responses.

* 2 people said that they have students copy their own tapes. The
duplicating equipment is set up in a public access area. Masters tapes are
kept "secure" and are checked out (using an ID card).

* 0ne requires a form to be filled out (which is later used for record
keeping & tracking) and offers 24 hour turn around for copied tapes.

* Another offers on demand copying for lower use programs in combination
with an exchange system for higher demand programs (they make multiple
copies of the tapes when they have time, then students bring in blank
tapes to exchange for copied tapes).

* The fifth person makes copies of the entire tape set for all the
students (they have permission as long as the student is enrolled in the
class and has purchased the textbook). Students are required to return
the tapes before they can take the final exam. As a back up: student
accounts are charged if the tapes are not returned. (Someone else
commented on making copies of entire sets as one time: check your
copyright permission, some of the publishers may not allow this.)

This is a pretty small sample so please let me know if you have another
system!

Because of the space here, I donÍt think it will be feasible to set up the
fast copier in an accessible place so my student staff will be stuck with
the task of copying tapes for a while yet.

This of course brings up another question: do you sell tapes to students
to make sure they have the right kind (quality, length, etc.) or do you
require them to bring their own?

Thanks again,
Beth
