CALL FOR PAPERS
Twenty-Third Annual
Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and Literatures
hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Youngstown, Ohio
October 8 and 9, 1999

Keynote speakers for the 1999 conference will be:

Richard Donato of the University of Pittsburgh
Sharon Scinicariello of Case Western Reserve University

Proposals on topics related to the teaching of foreign languages in
general, or of one language in particular, are invited.   High school
teachers and graduate students, as well as university faculty are
encouraged to  submit proposals.  Deadline: April 19, 1999.   Notification
will be mailed by May 3, 1999.

Topics: Possible areas of focus might include: second language acquisition
theory, research and practice; pedagogical approaches and classroom
strategies; techniques and materials; innovations in media and technology;
language proficiency; teaching, testing and assessment; language and
culture; international business and foreign languages; internationalization
of the curriculum; ESL, ASL, and related topics.

Format: Proposals may be submitted for workshops (2 hours), lectures (50 or
25 minutes), or panel discussions (50 minutes).

Abstracts:      Two copies of a one-page, double spaced abstract (or of the
set of abstracts in the case of a panel), and the Session Proposal Form
should be submitted to the Conference Committee by April 19, 1999. If sent
by telefax (No. 330/742-2304, attn.  CTFLL, For.  Lang.), or e-mail
([log in to unmask]) hard copies should follow.  Notification will be sent no
later than May 3, 1999.

Final selection will be made on the basis of originality of basic idea
being presented, approach, methodology, immediate practical applicability
of materials to teaching, and the need to design a balanced program.

Proceedings:Papers presented at the Twenty-second Annual Conference will be
considered for publication in Perspectives in Foreign Language Teaching
(anticipated publication date: July 2000).  Presenters who wish to have
their papers considered are requested to submit a hard copy of their
presentation, as well as a copy on diskette, preferably as an ASCII text
file or WordPerfect 5.X or 6.0. The deadline for submission of manuscripts
will be February 1, 2000        .

Registration:All participants, including presenters, are required to
register and pay the registration fees.
