With Macs and (almost) all programs you simply follow one keyboard
combination.  For é, for example, hold down option key while typing "e".
Then release them and type "e". This gives an acute over the e.  Under
keycaps (find this under the apple on the menu bar) you can hold down
the option key to find where all accent marks are hidden.  So simple
and consistent, thank goodness.
