I'm a bit surprised about the problem with the sound quality with student to
student conferencing.   We have experienced no such problems. Is this just
with pair discussion or with group discussion? Are you having any other
sound problems (i.e. when transferring audio to students, when students make
their own recordings, with all/group call, etc)?  

I suppose I would first check the line-in level on the DIVACE.  This level
can be set very low.  High line-in levels could be the source of the
reverberations, and possibly, cause feedback "whine".
