Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to invite you to a symposium organized jointly by
myself and Brian Baer of Kent State University to take place at the Center
for International Studies and Programs at YSU on January 30, 1999. The
title of the symposium is: "Translating Cultures: A Symposium in Honor of
the Memory of Joseph Brodsky - American Citizen, English Essayist, Russian
Poet."

The symposium will be divided into three (successive) round-tables
on the following general topics: (1) Locating Culture, (2) Existing in
Translation: A Local Perspective, (3) More Than One: Translation as
Creation, or "what is gained in translation." AThe symposium is designed
to be interdisciplinary and multicultural. We expect the participation
anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and literary scholars in
addition to theoreticians and practitioners of translation. Gennadiy
Komarov, publisher of the only authorized edition of the complete collected
works of Brodsky in Russia, will be a special guest. Mr. Komarov will be a
Visiting Scholar at YSU during the month of January through mid-February.

The symposium is free and open to the public. A luncheon and an
evening poetry reading have also been scheduled.

If you are interested in attending and/or participating in any of
the panels (approx. 10 minute presentations), please contact me via email
at [log in to unmask] Students and graduate students are
        strongly urged to attend.
                                        Sincerely,

                                        Melissa T. Smith
