This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, April 17th, 
2017.



A GREAT GRAY OWL was discovered in Newport on February 25th, was relocated 
on March 1st, and has been seen on almost every day since then. It was last 
reported on April 11th. To look for the bird, take Corbin Road off of Route 
10 to Haserlet Park near the Newport Airport, or look in fields along the 
west side of Route 10 between Corbin Road and Croydon Brook Road. The most 
reliable viewing time is late afternoon. When you park, be sure not to block 
driveways, park away from buildings, and respect privacy. Do not trespass on 
private land. Stay off the airport runway. Please do not approach the owl 
too closely, do not play recordings, and do not disturb it. For more about

A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Harbor on April 10th.



A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen flying overhead in Sandwich on April 17th.



A BLACK VULTURE was seen in Ashland on April 16th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from North Conway on April 14th.



6 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at Sherman’s Farm fields in East Conway on April 
13th, and 5 were seen there on the 14th. A pair of SANDHILL CRANES was 
reported from Cherry Pond in NH Audubon’s Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in 
Jefferson on April 16th, and a single SANDHILL CRANE was seen in a field in 
Lee on April 13th.



A flock of 35 GLOSSY IBIS was seen along Route 1A just south of Odiorne 
Point State Park in Rye on April 17th.



A GLOSSY IBIS was seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on April 12th, 13th, 
and 14th. A SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a WILSON’S SNIPE were seen here on the 
13th.



A GLOSSY IBIS, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 7 BUFFLEHEADS 
were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 14th.



A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 2 pairs of NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen in 
Meadow Pond in Hampton on April 15th



A male RUDDY DUCK was seen at French Pond in Henniker on April 13th and 
14th.



8 BUFFLEHEADS were seen on the COCKERMOUTH RIVER in Hebron on April 16th, 
and 3 were seen on Lake Winnipesauke in Moultonborough on the 15th.



A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on Spofford Lake on April 13th.



An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen in Hebron, and 1 was seen in Durham, both on 
April 16th. An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen near Bradford Bog on the 12th.



An AMERICAN BITTERN and 2 VIRGINIA RAILS were reported from NH Audubon’s 
Thompson Wildlife Sanctuary in Sandwich during the past week. A VIRGINIA 
RAIL was heard in Hancock on April 16th.



4 PIPING PLOVERS were seen at Hampton Beach, on April 15th.



A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen near the Charlestown Wastewater Treatment 
Plant on April 16th.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included: 50 in Concord on 
April 12th, 46 in Concord on the 13th, 22 in Concord the 14th, and 15 in 
Concord on the 15th.



 2 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen along Cornwell Drive in Keene on April 14th.



A WOOD THRUSH was seen in Newfields on April 16th.



A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was reported from Manchester on April 13th.



A NORTHERN PARULA was seen in Hudson on April 15th, and 1 was seen in 
Hinsdale on the 16th. Additional warbler species reported during the past 
week included: LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, 
and PALM WARBLER.



Also reported during the past week were multiple sightings of: BLUE-GRAY 
GNATCATCHER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, EASTERN 
TOWHEE, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.



A VESPER SPARROW was seen in Rochester on April 12th. Other sparrow species 
reported during the past week included: FOX SPARROW, FIELD SPARROW, and 
SWAMP SPARROW.



An estimated 1,000 TREE SWALLOWS were seen at Spofford Lake on April 13th.



TREE SWALLOWS, BARN SWALLOWS, BANK SWALLOWS, and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED 
SWALLOWS have all been reported during the past week.



FISH CROWS were reported from several locations during the past week.



A MERLIN was seen in Orford on April 13th.



An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was reported from a birdfeeder located 
behind a house in Epping on February 12th, and it was seen nearly every day 
since then. It was last reported on April 4th, but may still be present.
