This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 14th, 
2016.



A REDWING was found foraging with AMERICAN ROBINS in Hollis on March 13th, 
and seen again on the 14th. The REDWING was seen at the far north end of the 
baseball field located off of Jeff Smith Way at the Hollis Brookline High 
School. It has been seen most reliably on the field and in adjacent thickets 
in back of a small blue scoreboard near Love Lane. This is an Old World 
species that is a vagrant to North America. If you look for the bird, please 
park along John Smith Way, but do not block the road. Additional parking can 
be found on the main road, but do not park in school parking lots or bird 
too close to the school. Do not park on Love Lane. Please be cautious of 
traffic, and be respectful of private property.



A TUFTED DUCK was discovered on Captain Pond in Salem on March 3rd, and has 
been seen there several times since then. It was last reported on the 8th. 
This is an Old World species regular to Alaska and a vagrant to the rest of 
North America. RING-NECKED DUCKS are very similar in appearance and there 
have been up to 20 of these present at the same time. Captain Pond has no 
public access. The best viewing is from Hooker Farm Road. Please park on 
Carriage Lane, or Olde Village Road. Please be cautious of traffic, and be 
respectful of private property.



3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at Great Meadow in Charlestown on 
March 8th, and 36 NORTHERN PINTAILS and 5 SNOW GEESE were seen here on the 
12th.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and a SNOW GOOSE were seen on the Connecticut 
River in Hinsdale on March 12th. A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on Lake 
Winnisquam in Laconia on March 9th.



A pair of GADWALLS was seen in Penacook on March 12th, 4 GADWALLS were seen 
on the Connecticut River in Lebanon on the 11th, a pair of LESSER SCAUP was 
seen in Concord on the 14th, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL and an AMERICAN WIGEON 
were seen in Meredith on the 14th.



A pair of NORTHERN PINTAILS was seen at Chapman's Landing in Stratham on 
March 8th, a pair was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on the 11th, and a 
pair was seen on the Connecticut River near Lebanon on the 11th.



7 RAZORBILLS were seen off the coast of Rye on March 8th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL, an ICELAND GULL, and a male NORTHERN SHOVELER were seen at 
the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on March 11th. The treatment plant 
is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, 
please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant 
personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and 
do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the 
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.



A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen on the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor 
and was last reported on March 12th.



At least 3 different SNOWY OWLS were seen in Rye Harbor State Park and the 
adjacent Awcomin Marsh area during the past week. When viewing a Snowy Owl 
please do not disturb the bird by approaching too closely, and please

A SHORT-EARRED OWL, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a MERLIN, and a BALD EAGLE were all 
seen in Awcomin Marsh in Rye on March 11th.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen migrating north over Concord on March 12th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Bow on March 11th, and 2 were seen in 
Manchester on the 13th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Kearsarge Mountain Road in Wilmot on March 
4th, and 1 was seen at Flagstone Industrial Park on Bald Mountain Road in 
Newport on March 6th.



3 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a RED CROSSBILL were seen in Errol on March 
13th.



3 COMMON REDPOLLS were reported from Waterville Valley on March 12th.



A few BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen with a flock of 100 CEDAR WAXWINGS in 
Plymouth on March 12th.



4 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in Lancaster on March 13th.



A male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen on the Trudeau Road trails in 
Bethlehem, and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and 6 GRAY JAYS were reported from 
the AMC Mizpah Spring Hut, all on March 12th.



A few RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in Penacook and Pittsfield, and several 
FISH CROWS were reported from Kingston, Merrimack, and Tilton, all during 
the past week.



A FOX SPARROW was seen in Lyme and 1 was seen in Orford, both on March 14th.



A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard in Lebanon on March 12th.



With the mild weather has been a small surge of spring migrants reported 
including: KILLDEER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, WILSON’S SNIPE, EASTERN PHOEBE, 
TURKEY VULTURE, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
