Another late posting from Sunday. Working out in the yard in Norwich on Sunday overheard a territorial standoff between a Catbird and a House Wren. The Wrens have been nest building in a bird house next to the vegetable garden/small orchard. The Catbird has returned to its usual summer haunt in the brush about 20-30 yards away.
They challenged each other vocally for about 30 minutes or so, with the Catbird doing its best rendition of every birdsong in its repertoire, including a vain attempt to imitate the lengthy and varied song of the Wren. The wren kept flitting between the birdhouse and the brush where the Catbird perched, singing and scolding all the while.
Judging from past experience, the Wren will hold its ground. Wrens seem to have more feistiness per ounce of bird than just about any other avian species. The nesting Wrens routinely chase off all challengers for the birdhouse (usually tree swallows and chickadees).
The hummingbirds have been very active in the yard, including some mating flight displays.
