How about your web field on the layout as a merge field, set as an Open URL button, with the web field itself as the link? On my machine, it opens into a new tab automatically, and I had to allow popups to make it work. (Blue underlined text makes it look like a 'real' link, although it won't turn purple after it is clicked.)
