Water level was down at the Pompy flats (Norwich, VT) in the late
afternoon/early evening today. Thanks to Kyle Jones for putting out an
alert about the presence of shorebirds. Other observers included Ed
Hack and Chris Rimmer.
Species of waterbirds found late today included Canada Geese, Wood
Duck, dozens of Mallards, a Green-winged Teal, a Hooded Merganser, a
Great Blue Heron, a Green Heron, a Black-bellied Plover, a
Semipalmated Plover, a Lesser Yellowlegs, a Semipalmated Sandpiper,
numerous Least Sandpipers, and a Short-billed Dowitcher. The dowitcher
flew off before dark. Surprisingly, no Killdeer were detected, in
contrast to a dozen or so present yesterday.
The changes in water levels at Pompy provide a good challenge in
trying to predict from day to day when conditions will be particularly
favorable for waterbirds.
