Ah, thanks! Yeah I'm still on Tiger. :-)

My workaround was to just use 'list folder' (which always returns a 
list), and since I was looping through it anyway to read each file's 
contents, I just did my filtering within that loop.

For the curious: my script was to record each open Eudora mailbox and 
message reference in a file, and later to read each file and reopen 
the window for what it recorded. I wrote it because I didn't want to 
take a chance on an upgrade or mishap making Eudora forget which 
windows were open.
BTW Chris, it was an earlier post of yours which provided me the code 
for getting those references, so thank you for that too. :D
