This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 23rd,
2013.
A VARIED THRUSH was seen and photographed at a birdfeeder in Dunbarton on
January 20th.
An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been coming to a birdfeeder on Grafton
Road in Alexandria since December 13th, and was last reported on January
22nd.
A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester on
December 30th, and has been several times since then. It was most recently
reported near 250 Commercial Street on January 18th. A female BARROW’S
GOLDENEYE was reported in the same area during the previous week.
A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, 4 CANVASBACKS, 26 RUDDY DUCKS, and a NORTHERN
PINTAIL were spotted on Great Bay on January 20th, and an ICELAND GULL was
seen on Great Bay on the 19th.
A female CANVASBACK was discovered on the Merrimack River in Concord on
January 14th, and was most recently reported on the 20th. It has been seen
from Hall Street in Concord, near the Concord Water Treatment Plant outflow.
A NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on January
19th.
A COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULL, an ICELAND GULL, and a female NORTHERN SHOVELER
were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on January 18th.
A GLAUCOUS GULL, an ICELAND GULL, 5 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, and 4
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen in the Hampton Harbor area on January 17th.
3 ICELAND GULLS were seen at Hampton Beach State Park on January 19th, 1 was
seen on Eel Pond in Rye on the 19th, and 1 was seen in Windham on the 20th.
A RAZORBILL was seen in Hampton Harbor, and 1 was seen from Hampton Beach
State Park, both on January 17th.
5 HOARY REDPOLLS were reported among a large flock of COMMON REDPOLLS in
Strafford, and 1 was seen in Stratham, all on January 19th.
COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included: an estimated 1.000
in a flock in Strafford on January 20th, 150 in Stratham on the 19th, 20 in
Jaffrey on the 23rd, and 19 in Merrimack on the 18th.
PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included: 20 in Manchester at
the Home Depot on January 22nd, and 7 on Woodbury Avenue in Portsmouth on
the 20th.
A flock of over 20 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen along Horse Hill Road in
Marlborough on January 20th.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen off of Jones Avenue in Portsmouth on January
19th.
A PINE WARBLER has been a regular visitor to a birdfeeder in Newmarket since
the end of December and was most recently reported on January 22nd.
A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS was seen at the corner of West Brook and Canal
Streets in Manchester on January 17th.
HERMIT THRUSH sightings during the past week included 1 in Mont Vernon on
January 23rd, 1 in Merrimack on the 22nd, and 1 in Barrington on the 22nd.
EASTERN BLUEBIRD sightings during the past week included 8 in Barrington on
January 22nd, 10 in Newmarket on the 22nd, and 5 in Merrimack on the 18th.
A BELTED KINGFISHER was seen on Otter Brook near Granite Lake in Munsonville
on January 18th.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Hampton Falls on January 17th, and 1 was
seen in Newmarket on the 20th. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen in Wilton on
the 18th.
A TURKEY VULTURE and a PIED-BILLED GREBE were reported from Hudson, and 2
TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Windham, all on January 20th.
