This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, September
26th, 2012.
A BLACK VULTURE was seen migrating along with a group of over 180 TURKEY
VULTURES in Epping on September 20th.
An immature COMMON GALLINULE was seen at World End Pond in Salem on
September 26th.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was reported from Effingham on September 24th.
A DICKCISSEL and 60 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at Boggy Meadow Farm in
Walpole on September 23rd.
A MARBLED GODWIT, and 7 WHIMBRELS were seen from Cross Beach Road in
Seabrook on September 23rd.
2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, and 2 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor
on September 22nd. 6 FORSTER'S TERNS were tallied here on the 18th.
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen at Jenness Beach, and another was seen at
Wallis Sands, both in Rye on September 22nd, and 4 were seen at the Exeter
Wastewater Treatment Plant on September 24th.
A WESTERN SANDPIPER and 8 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen at Plaice Cove
in Hampton on September 18th.
An immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Eel Pond in Rye on
September 18th, and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Odiorne
Point State Park in Rye on September 22nd.
A RED CROSSBILL was seen on September 18th, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen
on the 17th, both in Pittsfield.
2 CAPE MAY WARBLERS were seen at Balch Hill in Grafton on September 20th,
and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen in Rye on September 24th.
A male RUDDY DUCK was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, and an
AMERICAN COOT was seen on Eel Pond in Rye, both on September 23rd.
A GREAT CORMORANT was reported from Crawford Notch on September 22nd.
2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 9 PIED-BILLED GREBES, and an AMERICAN BITTERN were seen
at Copps Pond in Tuftonboro on September 25th.
18 PIED-BILLED GREBES were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on
September 26th. 60 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were counted here on the 20th.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen in Durham on September 20th, and a
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Rumney on September 18th.
RAPTOR migration is under way with over 10,000 raptors(including a SWAINSON'S
HAWK on September 10th) already reported from the Pack Monadnock Raptor
Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and nearly 5,000(including a BLACK
VULTURE on September 21st) reported from the Carter Hill Observatory in
Concord, all since August 25th. Be sure to visit these observatories this
fall season to help out with the count!
Numerous THRUSHES were heard migrating at night and identified by their
flight-calls, including 22 SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, 2 possible BICKNELL'S
THRUSHES, 5 VEERYS, 4 HERMIT THRUSHES, and 2 WOOD THRUSHES, all in
Pittsfield on September 20th.
Approximately 3,500 TREE SWALLOWS were seen migrating along Jenness and
Sawyer's Beaches in Rye on September 22nd.
19 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 150 GREAT SHEARWATERS, a MANX SHEARWATER, 3 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 85 NORTHERN GANNETS, 2 GREAT CORMORANTS, 9 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, and 12 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported from a pelagic
bird and whale-watch cruise to the Gulf of Maine on September 17th. Not all
of the birds were seen in NH waters.
There was an unconfirmed report of a WHITE-TAILED KITE in Gonic during the
past week. Birders are encouraged to check the area for this bird.
