WEDNESDAY WEDNESDAY WEDNESDAY

Diner-hisTOUREy! 6:35 AM.

The Historic Miss Bellows Falls Diner, Bellows Falls, Vermont

RSVP to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

The scythe of graduation approaches, and I am obsessed with my legacy. Can I take comfort in the tale of Ella Bellows, aka Miss Bellows Falls? She was born with all of life's advantage--her great-great-grandfather was Saul Bellow, the town's founder. She had a lithe body, sumptuous bosom, and enchanting smile that was on display all 7 years she won the Annual Bellows Falls Foxhunt. And her biscuits were so good, they decided to not dam the Bellow Falls river out of a fear that tampering with the water would ruin their taste. Yet history is not forged by the routines of foxhunts and foxy cooks. It is the product of great moments. Like on New Year's Day 1925, when Calvin Coolidge stopped in for lunch. Coolidge, an ambitious man with a voracious appetite, shoveled biscuits down his throat like coal going into the Titanic. Something got stuck. As he began to turn red and slam the table, Ms. Bellows ran over and pulled the offending food chunk out of his gullet with her well-manicured finger. Coolidge sat silently for a minute, gasped "Thank you" and walked out to his coach, en route to his Presidential Inauguration. When asked why he continually showed such restraint in the Oval Office, only served one term, and pushed for peace, prosperity, and freedom, Coolidge said it was because he "tasted a biscuit in my lung, the consequence of tyranny." Ms. Bellow would later receive a paid bill, and a notice from DC saying that the Bellows Falls Diner would forever be immortalized in the US Register of Historic Places. We can all make history. But we often owe less to our achievements, and more to being willing to shove our finger into the right place at the right time.
The ride is free, bring small bills.
