Restored iTunes 10.5.3 with Time Machine and was then told that "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." 

Restored iTunes Library.itl (which resides in YourHomeFolder > Music > iTunes) with an older copy and now everything seems to be fine again.
