Hi,

I just heard a fascinating story about the use of Twitter during a lecture at the university of Trier in Germany.  The radio broadcast was produced by Deutschlandfunk as part of the "Campus und Karriere" program.  If you know German, enjoy, if not, find a colleague to translate it on the fly.

An der Uni Trier können Studenten während der Vorlesung über ihr Laptop oder Smartphone Fragen an ihren Professor Hans-Jürgen Bucher richten, die dann auf einer "Twitter-Wall" für alle sichtbar angezeigt werden.

The professor using it was very happy with the added communication channel, which enables e.g. shy students to ask questions in a lecture hall of 200+ students.

"[...] Aber in dem Moment, wo die Äußerung eben an der Twitter-Wall erscheint, sehen alle, dass jetzt ein Problem vorliegt, und alle sehen natürlich auch, dass jetzt der Vortragende darauf einzugehen hat. Und von daher sehe ich schon auch ein Demokratisierungselement in dieser Verwendung von Twitter als Feedback-Kanal. Die Demokratisierung besteht natürlich auch darin, dass auch ein Moment der Unkontrollierbarkeit in die Veranstaltung kommt, denn natürlich kann man provokante Fragen stellen, man kann den Vortragenden infrage stellen, und all diese Dinge sind natürlich auch schon passiert."

The democratization of scientific communication, e.g. every one can see the questions being asked by the audience, but provocative questions or challenging the speaker could also happen.
