Sorry for the delay but...following up on 3 Coots seen by Ed Hack
yesterday George Clark, Doug and I headed down to Lake Runemede in
Windsor. We got there slightly after 5pm, so didn't have a ton of
light to work with, but that turned out to be advantageous. After
scanning unsuccessfully for the Coots, we watched as a huge goose
flock landed near us on the back side of the pond. Doug counted 500
birds (by tens), but 6 stragglers pushed our official count to 510.
However, by the time it was all said and done, I ebirded 500 Canada
Geese. At least 3 of the geese were two small for Canada--Cackling
Geese. We struggled with the identification for a while, took some
pictures and notes then continued the coot hunt. Field guides, outside
opinions and the pictures were plenty to clinch the identification
once we returned home. And we found the coots on the way out!
