21st Century Skills Map for World Languages: Technologies in Support of 21st Century Language Learning

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: August 22, 2011

"Physical distances are no longer barriers to learning and sharing information about different cultures, languages, and traditions. Internet technologies have bridged the geographic distance that separate global communities, raising the importance of developing the skills needed for communicating and collaborating with people from different countries. Students, therefore, need opportunities to take advantage of the communications and collaboration tools available in today's wired classrooms to engage in projects and dialogue with their international peers. Just as students can deepen their knowledge when teamed with their peers in the classroom, students can both broaden their perspective and enrich their understanding of the world through relationships with their international counterparts. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) have come together to identify a set of twelve skills that are essential for American students' participation in the global community through areas of foreign language skills and cultural awareness.
We invite technology professionals and faculty to submit presentations that showcase technologies that support the acquisition of key competencies reflected in the 21st Century Skills Map for World Languages, in particular, communication, collaboration, global awareness, and technology, information or media literacies, as aligned with the ACTFL Standards and the ACTFL Performance Guidelines (novice, intermediate, advanced).

TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS:
NERALLT seeks presentation perspectives and formats which aim to engage the audience interactively:
. 30 minute Individual/Group Presentations (not including Q&A)
. Roundtable discussions or Panels (30 minutes with a maximum of 3 presenters and 15 minutes Q&A)
. Electronic Poster sessions
. Workshops (1- to 2-hours, hands-on)
. Lightning Round sessions (5-minute presentations followed by facilitated group discussion). Possible topics for lightning rounds include: Mobile technologies, virtual realities, blended learning, technologies that extend the learning outside of the classroom

SUGGESTED TOPICS:
Here are just a few examples of technology that aligns with six of the twelve ACTFL 21st century skills. However, we welcome presentations that address any of the 12 skills. . Communication: Utilizing audio and video files in blended learning contexts to experience authentic communication in the target language.
. Collaboration: Implementing video or web conferencing systems to facilitate collaborations with target language speakers on a project.
. Global Awareness: Using a variety of target language online resources to investigate an issue involving the target language culture.
. Technology, Information, or Media Literacies: Navigating social media appropriately, working with authentic online media or selecting effective presentation tools.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT:
. Send an abstract of proposed contribution with title and type of presentation(s) (Individual/Group Presentation, Workshop, Electronic Poster, Lightning Round, Roundtable/Panel).
. Abstracts should be no longer than 75 words for Lightning Round, 150 words for Posters, and 250 for all others.

Please also include the following:
Name(s) of the presenter(s) in the order you would like them to appear in the program, their institutional affiliation, including the city and state of the institution (please underline the name of the presenter who will be the correspondent) and email address(es).
Note about A/V equipment:
Union College will provide a data projector. We recommend you bring your own computer, for Mac users please also bring dongle. We can provide a laptop PC upon request (to be made at time of submission).
