This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, March 9th, 
2011.



A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was discovered feeding in fruit trees and in nearby 
treetops near the town library in Strafford on February 11th, and was last 
reported on March 6th. To try to see this bird, it is recommended that you 
stay in your car and view the fruit trees from a distance.



400 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Meredith, near Route 3 across from the 
town docks, and 100 were seen on Stevenson Hill Road in North Sandwich, both 
on March 8th, and 20 were seen in Henniker on the 7th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from Strafford on March 5th.



3 HOARY REDPOLLS were reported from Strafford on March 5th, and 1 was 
reported from Wolfeboro on the 7th.



Over1,200 COMMON REDPOLLS were reported during the past week. including: 200 
in Hancock, 200 in Strafford, 160 in Bow, 150 in Hillsborough, 100 in New 
London, 100 in Francestown, 100 in Hollis, 60 in Lebanon, 40 in Chichester, 
30 in Durham, 30 in Derry, 20 in Swanzey, 20 in Wolfeboro, 20 in Enfield 
Center, and 14 in Plymouth.



3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at the Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth on 
March 5th.



A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen from Great Boar's Head in Hampton on 
March 6th, and a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported from the Connecticut 
River in Hinsdale on March 5th.



A REDHEAD was seen in Hampton in the area of Henry's Pool and the south side 
of Meadow Pond from Winnacunnet Road on March 8th and 9th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor, and an ICELAND GULL was seen at 
the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, both on March 5th.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported from Dover on March 9th.



2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, a GLAUCOUS GULL, 5 ICELAND GULLS, and a "NELSON'S" 
GULL were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on March 3rd. The 
treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on 
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering 
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during 
daylight hours.



11 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 21 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 201 COMMON 
GOLDENEYES, 16 COMMON MERGANSERS, 30 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 BUFFLEHEAD, 1 
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 AMERICAN COOT, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 1 HORNED GREBE, 12 
RING-BILLED GULLS, 4 HERRING GULLS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 1 KILLDEER, 40 SNOW 
BUNTINGS were tallied on the Connecticut River and in the area, in Hinsdale 
on March 5th, and 6th.



4 GREAT CORMORANTS were reported from the Merrimack River in Hooksett on 
March 3rd.



A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen in Hampton Harbor on March 5th.



2 KILLDEER were seen along River Road in Hollis on March 7th, and one was 
reported from Rye on the 6th.



An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was reported from Newington on March 7th.



A MERLIN was seen in Nashua on March 8th.



There were several reports of COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, TURKEY VULTURES, CAROLINA WRENS, and RED-BELLIED 
WOODPECKERS during the past week.
