Just to point out re. the movie viewing room that for most foreign as well as
domestic films the right to a free public showing costs $$ (often lots of $$ even
for an older movie--when a distribution company buys the rights to sell the DVD
they often also buy and count on the income from such showings). Right now I think
the companies are more focused on the threat posed by streaming video, but remember
that a free-of-charge foreign movie festival based on DVDs people own is illegal.
On the other hand, I have been thinking lately about international TV channels
(since we just lost most of ours) and it would be cool if one could get a group
following a serial or movie series on a channel. Presumably they could watch live
or one could TIVO it to a convenient time.
