Actually there was an interesting accent correction program called TEAM, which  
was developed quite a while ago (more than 10 years I think) for learners of English.  
It had visual displays tailored to particular aspects of pronunciation. There  
was one kind of display for vowels, another for intonation, etc.

So a more nuanced approach is not pie in the sky.
