Subject: Standardized testing of proficiency
Hi,
In response to the question about oral proficiency testing using a national scale....Pittburgh
Public Schools have administered and rated thousands of SOPI -type assessments
(using the ACTFL scale) over the course of the last 15 years in grades 5 and 8,
level 3 high school, and seniors. The beauty of the ACTFL scale is that it can
be used to articulate programs from kindergarten through graduate school. A description
of the PPS program can be found in Foreign Language Annals, Vol. 40, No. 3 (Fall,
2007).
Over the years we have given many workshops for k-12 and college level, demonstrating
how this annual testing is done.
We are scheduled to do a full-day workshop at the upcoming NECTFL conference in
April (see www.nectfl.org). The workshop will focus on the ACTFL scale, creating
a SOPI-type test, and practice rating a few speech samples. Participants will
receive a copy of sample tests in Fr, G. J, and Sp, the rating rubric, and other
ancillary materials.
Thekla Fall, Ed.D.
