This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, August 18th, 
2010.



A CASPIAN TERN was seen briefly in Hampton Harbor on August 16th, and 
FORSTER'S TERN, a BLACK TERN were seen on the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth 
on the 15th, and a BLACK TERN, over 200 COMMON TERNS, and 20 BONAPARTE'S 
GULLS were seen from Hilton Park in Dover on the 16th.



2 MANX SHEARWATERS were seen flying south along the coast of Rye and Hampton 
on August 16th.



A birder on the Granite State Whale Watch out of Rye Harbor reported 85 
GREAT SHEARWATERS, 8 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, and 225 
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS on August 17th, and 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS were reported 
from a similar cruise on the 14th.



A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on Rye Ledge on August 13th.



A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen in the salt pannes located along Route 1A just 
south of Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on August 13th.



2 WHIMBRELS and 9 ROSEATE TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on August 15th, 
and 7 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen there on the 14th.



A NORTHERN SHOVELER, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 20 LEAST 
SANDPIPERS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on August 
18th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 
on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering 
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during 
daylight hours. A PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 17 LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen at 
Pickering Ponds on the 16th.



A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen in the Little River Saltmarsh in North Hampton 
on August 11th.



12 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 24 KILLDEER, and 7 AMERICAN KESTRELS were seen at the 
Pease International Tradeport from Short Road in Newington on August 14th.

10 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 7 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and a SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER were seen at the 
Charlestown Wastewater Treatment Plant on August 17th.



Shorebirds were counted while roosting at the Yankee Fisherman's Cooperative 
in Seabrook during a very high tide on August 13th. The following numbers 
were noted: 380 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 1,100 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and a LEAST SANDPIPER.



A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 2 BLACK SCOTERS, 12 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 5 
NORTHERN GANNETS, 31 GREAT EGRETS, 35 SNOWY EGRETS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, 57 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 748 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 27 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 20 
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 10 SANDERLINGS, 28 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 
6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 11 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 88 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 
3 LAUGHING GULLS, 3 ROSEATE TERNS, 92 COMMON TERNS, and 1,800 TREE SWALLOWS 
were tallied along the coast on August 14th.



5 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 12 LEAST SANDPIPERS were reported from the Hinsdale 
Setbacks on the Connecticut River on August 17th.



A PIED-BILLED GREBE, a LAUGHING GULL, and 2 GREEN HERONS were seen at the 
Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on August 12th.



18 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and an AMERICAN BITTERN were seen on Powder Mill Pond 
in Hancock on August 15th. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported in small numbers 
from several locations during the past week as they begin migrating south.



A PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 5 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 2 PINE WARBLERS were reported 
from East Inlet Road in Pittsburg on August 14th.



A TENNESSEE WARBLER was reported from Pittsfield on August 12th.



A MERLIN was reported from Lund Road in Nashua on August 15th.



A GREAT EGRET was reported from Horseshoe Pond in Concord on August 15th, 
and 6 were reported from along the Connecticut River between Bellows Falls 
and Charlestown on the 17th.



A BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen in North Hampton on August 15th.
