This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, August 4th,
2010.
MISSISSIPPI KITES have again been reported from the Newmarket and Durham
area. There are at least 2 adults and a fledgling being occasionally seen,
but there is no certain location where they can be reliably viewed. The best
strategy for seeing them is to visit the following areas, and watch for
soaring birds: The Nature Conservancy(TNC) Lamprey River Preserve off of
Packers Falls Road in Durham, across from the Elementary School on Main
Street in Newmarket, and the TNC Lubberland Creek Preserve off of Bay Road
in Newmarket. Be sure to report any sightings on eBird.
A FORSTER'S TERN was seen in Hampton Harbor on August 3rd, and a LEAST TERN
was seen in Hampton Harbor on July 31st.
Birders on the Granite State Whale Watch out of Rye Harbor reported 21 GREAT
SHEARWATERS, a SOOTY SHEARWATER, 360 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 23 NORTHERN
GANNETS, and a LAUGHING GULL in New Hampshire waters all on August 1st.
10 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 400 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a WHIMBREL, a HUDSONIAN
GODWIT, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES, a RED KNOT, 100 SANDERLINGS, 700 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 300 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 5 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS, 5 ROSEATE TERNS, and 175 COMMON TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on
August 3rd.
100 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, 55 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 20
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 10 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 55 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 250
COMMON TERNS, and 5 SALTMARSH SPARROWS were reported from the coast on
August 3rd.
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 10 GREAT EGRETS, 57 SNOWY EGRETS, a WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, 2 LEAST TERNS, 3 ROSEATE TERNS, and 301 COMMON TERNS were
reported from the coast on August 1st.
3 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen foraging on muddy flats in
Surry Lake on August 1st.
A GLOSSY IBIS was seen in Hampton on July 31st.
A GREAT EGRET was seen along Route 10 in Winchester on August 3rd.
3 GREEN HERONS and 15 BELTED KINGFISHERS were reported from the Nashua River
in Nashua and Hollis on July 31st.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a VIRGINIA RAIL were seen at Pickering Ponds
off of Pickering Road in Rochester on July 28th.
2 RED CROSSBILLS and a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER were reported from the trails
off of Trudeau Road in Bethlehem on July 31st.
4 BICKNELL'S THRUSHES and 3 BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported from the top of
Cannon Mountain in Franconia on July 31st.
3 GRAY JAYS and 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported from the summit of Mount
Magalloway in Pittsburg on August 1st.
2 MERLINS were seen on the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center campus in
Lebanon on August 2nd, and one was reported from Dana Road in Hanover on
August 1st.
A FISH CROW was reported from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on August 3rd.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was reported from River Road in Lyme on July 30th.
Over 2,000 TREE SWALLOWS were seen along the coast on August 3rd.
A SCISSORTAIL FLYCATCHER is being seen in the Sandy Point section of Plum
Island, Massachusetts, and has been present for several days. It has been
frequenting the farthest most point to the right as you walk out to the
beach and often perching on driftwood. It was last reported on July 31st.
