Deanne,

At the University of Hawaii, a "traditional" Chinese placement test is used.
It is a written test only. There is no listening or speaking component.
The placement test was written by the Chinese faculty here. It is
administered by the academic advisor of the East Asian Languages Department
and he says the test has worked pretty well over the years. Other languages
at the University of Hawaii use different tests. Spanish uses BYU's WebCape
Spanish Placement. Japanese uses their own written test which was also
written by the faculty here and does include a listening component. Other
languages including French, German, Hawaiian, Filipino, and Ilocano also use
a written placement test of their own. The tests are administered by each
of the language divisions on specified dates during course registration.

Aloha,

Hi,
I am looking for information on Mandarin Chinese placement testing.
Does anyone use a technology (e.g., web-based) placement test for
Chinese? If so, what is it?

Does anyone use a "traditional" placement test for Chinese? How is
this administered in your institution? Is it the same for all other
languages?

Thanks,
Deanne
