>Subject: online German from the University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania is launching its online language series
by offering an intensive elementary German course starting July 6th.
This six-week summer course will meet online with the instructor on MTWT
EST from 7:30 pm to 8:45 pm. This course is designed for the beginning
student with no previous knowledge of German. As the first course in
the first-year series, it will focus on the development of language
competencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of
the semester, students will be able to talk and write about themselves,
family and friends and develop reading and listening strategies for
simple magazine articles, short literary texts, and film clips. The
synchronous part of the course, the online classroom, will be conducted
using Adobe connect and will provide students with conversational
practice of the forms and themes learned with the customized materials
from the course management site in Blackboard and from the assignments
in Deutsch Interaktiv von der Deutschen Welle. Both the synchronous and
asynchronous activities (homework) will preface the production phase in
which students will post information about themselves in a social
network, respond to questions using Wimba voiceboards, write about
topics related to the course in blogs, and converse in oral and written
online chats. For more information about the course, interested
students can go to: http://www.sas.upenn.edu/summer/GRMN101981

Registered students with previous knowledge of German are required to
take a placement test, which will be administered online on Tuesday,
June 29th. All students will be required to participate in a short
orientation to the technology before the start of the course.
Orientations will begin Monday, June 28th.
