The biggest language class at UF (elementary Spanish) is moving from 5 contact
hours/week to 3, using online material developed by the publisher to supplement
the contact hours. I don't think that the students have to log in at a
particular time or for a particular length of time, though. They just have to
complete the assigned work. However, some assignments may involve meeting a
partner in the online interface for conversations.

These courses have always been so big (so many sections) that it was not
possible to accommodate them for a weekly lab hour--or rather, it would have
involved having multiple schedules for the various sections (lab day for
sections a,b,c,d,e on Monday, for f,g,h,I,j on Tuesday, and for k,l on
Wednesday).

Tina:

(Though you requested a direct message, I assume others may have your same
question, so I'm replying publicly.) Hard on the heels of TBob's
generous(^_^) message, I write to say that Yale has no out-of-class worktime
requirement. Certain languages require a weekly hour or more of one-on-one
tutoring, but that is in the flesh.

Best,
Trip
