Birgit,

For placement, it is good to be able to use standardized test scores (AP,
SAT-II, IB) because many students already have them. For French, German, Latin,
and Spanish, an institution can administer the SAT-II tests on campus to
students who don't have a recent score. The problems with this are (1) just
giving the multiple-choice (and even eliminating any listening) makes it easy to
administer and score, but not the best test overall, and (2) the scores need to
be normed over a period, comparing the final grades of students completing
introductory language courses with their scores on a test administered at the
end of the semester.
