Our LangLab PASSPORT software allows one to do this easily with the
lesson-creation module. Typically, it is a good idea to associate the whole clip
with an item of a lesson, so that the student can click the URL button, pop up
the clip in a media player, and view the original. But in creating the item one
also captures the sound from the clip as the internal audio clip for the item
and then uses easy sound-editing tools to cut out one character's speeches. One
can then put the text of those speeches in the text window for the item,
allowing the student to play the part of that character. For the following item,
you might use the same scene, but cut out a different character's part, etc. And
for pairs/groups, you can have them view the original, have them click a button
to pop up a document with the script presenting different characters' speeches
in different font colors to avoid confusion, and have each student take one
part. Just another example of LangLab's flexibility.
